“Photojournalism of the Fall”

A speculative artwork

I want to see photojournalism of apocalypse: camera-images of moments of falling and calamity. Like the photos that blanketed newspapers when I was growing up, these would feign naturalness, as if taken by an unseen observer. And like those photos, these would nonetheless be patently staged, with just the right lighting and composition and subjects. I envision a room devoted to historically significant moments of collapse, such as the moment when barbarians enter Rome (although weren’t there many such instances? Why privilege one?), or when the Greeks finally breached the walls of Troy. Falls like these count as apocalypse for those who had an interest in maintaining institutions, metaphysics, or hierarchies.
